As we know Lords of Xulima was modeled after the great classic rpg series of old. People that played these games will find tiny elements in Lords of Xulima that are directly related to these games. So I wanted to start the list with all nods to classic rpg series that can be found. Of course, feel free to add your own findings to make this list more complete.

List of references

1. Might and Magic

Wells you can drink from to increase your stats -> In the classic games (1-5) they gave temporary buffs while in the later games all sorts of crazy stuff could happen. Example: healing, death, monsters appearing, experience boosts.

Cauldrons with colored liquids to gain permanent stat increases -> Especially in the later games barrels with colored liquids like that could be found almost everywhere.

Increasing your food reserves up to X days -> While this mechanic may confuse some people, Might and Magic veterans will know it since part 6.

2. Amberstar & Ambermoon ( from Thalion )

The combat grid and the possibility to move around your party members in combat. With that you got a deep tactical combat where you had to plan ahead.

The Riddles on the Map ---> They did it with riddle mouths who where positioned as walls in dungeons.

Thanks a lot WintermuteX !

It just gives me the creeps when i think about the year i was playing those and what year we have now .....

But time did not diminish the great experience i had with those games, as with so many other great games from that time.

Absolutely true. One of the things which impressed me back then was how you found the magic picture in the house where you start and you had an GUI element to see the time of the day and later you find the compass to get this as a GUI element and the clock ... what a great idea back then. :D Also traveling by magic lense or the witchbroom. :)

But to add something to the list:

3. Wizardry

The tactical round based combat reminded me also of this classic. :)
An example of the last game of the series can be found here http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=s3t_Qecnpac

4. Spiderweb games (Geneforge, Avernum)

The exploring of the map wandering around in isometric perspective. Well, in Xulima without the grid movement. ^^

5. Phantasy Star IV

I remember playing Phantasy Star IV on sega genesis. It's one if the only games back then that had me playing over 60 hours, but this particular game you walk around in isometric and when you fight it's first person. Same formula as LoX

Indeed, Phantasy Star was the first true RPG I played when I was a child (8 years or so) in my old SEGA Master System. It was incredibly hard as I had to figure out all the texts with a English Dictionary (I learned much about that foreign language...) oh good times ;)
